February 08 Feel Ableton 2nd Year Anniversary Guests: Korruptor, Nebulae

The band called Nebulae was born in 1992 (insert old-fart jokes here) on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley when PhD student Takeshi Kurt Eto and pre-law undergraduate Abid Hussain decided to put completely diverse musical backgrounds together. The result: Nebulae the band persisted for 10 years, producing seven records and a plethora of remixes for artists all over the world. Our mantra was simple - we created music that was completely nebulous. Any given album could contain rock, rap, house, trance, or polka. If it sounded interesting and stretched our creativity, it went on the record. We worked on very simple equipment, and we made the most of the Internet at its infancy. At one time we had a cult following in Lithuania! (WTF?!) In 1995, Abid went to law school in Oregon, and Kurt moved to LA to work on his web hosting business. From that point, continuing Nebulae as a long-distance band became difficult. We still produced some of our best records, such as the crowing achievement of 1997's Nebulae : World Wide Eclecticae, but the magic began to erode due to the necessities and realities of life. We produced our last record as a band in 2002.

As of 2003, the band split, and I (Abid) took on the persona of Nebulae. At that time, I began to use Ableton Live as my main software to play live shows, and as Live evolved, so did my workflow. The tool allowed a new level of creativity and a more sophisticated level of detail in my music. I also became more heavily influenced by all forms of electronica, specifically, progressive house, trance, and breakbeat. I never forgot my roots that are deep in melodic composition, but moving forward, I married those roots with the percussive sounds of beat-driven dance floor music. From 2003 to present, I continued to work on remixes and live shows, including getting involved with LaptopDeathmatch.com. Doing laptop battles began to stretch me out of my comfort zone, in which far too many artists become entrenched. The net effect resulted in three additional side projects (Chlorophyll, Kundalini Shock Attack , and heavy collaboration with Triprocket) and a new concept album called "Nebulae : Wallpaper." The record would contain elements of melodic progression, minimal house beats and electro noises. The goal of this record is to allow listeners to tune in and pay attention to the subtle details and textures if they want, or leave it in the background to enhance moods or fill space. Wallpaper indeed.

During my spare time, I'm also a practicing attorney in Dallas, Texas. This DJ set contains many songs from the upcoming album Nebulae : Wallpaper, and I performed it a few weeks ago at Zubar in Dallas. Enjoy

Gareth Noyce, aka Korruptor, is based in Southampton England, currently playing a twice monthly residency at StreamFM and running the popular RK2 podcast, which is an exclusive outlet for his DJ sets and those of other well known DJs from around the world.

Having grown up surrounded by the sounds of late 70s Disco and early 80s synth-pop, electronic dance music has always featured heavily in his musical library. After having his ears turned by the acid house sound, K took the plunge and began DJing on a friends setup in the early 90s, during the tail end of the South Coast Rave scene. His early sound was a rush-bound mix of hard house, euro-trance and Goa, which he played for numerous local parties.

Living in the middle of a vibrant club-scene on the South Coast meant his musical tastes soon shifted and the more progressive, house sounds - championed by the likes of Ian Ossia, Len-E 9, Smoking Jo, Billy Nasty, Digweed and of course, Sasha - started to heavily influence what he listened to and played out during the latter part of the 90s.

Despite the roller coaster changes and splits in house sounds over the years, K keeps returning to the progressive vibe, be it break laced, acid fueled, minimal or tech edged and his live sets often reflect his tastes over the years - wandering across genres and tempos as the night dictates. No need to go on and on about who i think i am, or who others think i am...i will say that i have believed in the power of EDM since youth, and for sure feel its universalness...which brings me to the now! Today, i choose EDM (electronic dance music) as a medium to carry out a clear message: to always give back, to be more conscious, and to bring more peace and love on earth...It all starts with the self, and your own universe...If you know, accept, and love yourself, then you will clearly see it in others and around you...EDM has the power to gather, and take you on a self voyage like no other music, all due to its abstractness and trance inducing beats, rhythms, harmonies, and melodies...Why do i believe in this music? Listen and find out for yourself...Much love, always, 8
